Labour Court recommends higher hourly premium at Kells Stainless

The Labour Court recommended that Kells Stainless raise its hourly premium from €1.50 to €1.75, while rejecting a request from the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and the National Union of Sheet Metal Workers of Ireland to fold it into basic pay. The recommendation was dated 18 April 2002. The unions said consolidating the €1.50 premium would bring the hourly rate to €13.78, still below comparable industries, and sought a bonus scheme. Kells Stainless argued comparisons with unrelated industries were unsuitable and the change would increase costs. The Court recommended the company and unions explore an improved, self-financing bonus scheme, with the increased premium available as a fallback, and discuss a new scheme within three months.
