In 2002, the Labour Court found Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had a valid cause for complaint over Stena Line's decision to hire two permanent part-time workers in its Freight Reservation Department. The recommendation was dated 8 April 2002. The union said the move breached a 1993 agreement requiring discussion before permanent part-time recruitment; Stena Line said the arrangement offered greater flexibility and improved service amid serious losses. The Court recommended that Stena Line reassure the union it would honour existing agreements unless they were renegotiated or replaced.
