The Labour Court did not recommend a lead-in payment for Tyco Healthcare Ireland Limited workers moved to a four-shift cycle at its Tullamore plant. Its recommendation was dated 15 February 2002. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought €254 per year of service and better canteen facilities for night workers. The Court said the company’s failure to consult the union before introducing the system was unacceptable, but did not recommend a payment because shift working was established and earnings would rise. It recommended consultation on a different pattern if a significant majority wanted a change, while retaining four-shift working.
