In 2001, the Labour Court recommended that Tara Mines report on its planned January review after it laid off 650 workers indefinitely from 17 November. The recommendation was signed on 29 November. The Group Of Unions sought assurance that workers would return within 13 weeks or receive severance terms no less favourable than those applied in 1995. Tara Mines said falling zinc prices had caused substantial losses and it could not give a restart date. The Court said employees and their families could not remain in uncertainty indefinitely. It said it would make a definitive recommendation if the company's plan did not proceed as outlined, or if the review was postponed or did not take place and either party requested it.
