The Labour Court recommended that the Irish Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals pay a worker £15,000 for the loss of a promised promotion to Dog Warden Service Manager. The recommendation was dated 17 September 2001.
The worker, represented by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, had been offered the post in 1998 at £30,000 a year and sought £38,000. She accepted subject to agreement on salary. The Society said no agreement had been reached and argued that it was entitled to restructure after the manager post ceased to exist.
The Court found she could reasonably expect the offer to remain open while the salary issue was referred to it. It accepted the Society’s right to change its management structure but found it had failed to account for its prior commitments. The Court also recommended that the parties jointly consider how to make better use of her skills and experience in her current role.
