In 2001, the Labour Court recommended maintaining the pay link between Iarnrod Eireann’s Traffic Co-ordinators and Signal Person Grade 1, subject to the unions accepting the company’s proposed work changes. The recommendation, dated 5 September 2001, concerned 30 staff. The National Bus and Rail Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought the link as part of a dispute over pay, restructuring and rest periods. The Court recommended a 39-hour annual rate of £23,432.08, with pro-rata adjustments for longer contracts, and said contract hours should reflect operational needs within a range of 39 to 48 hours. It also recommended further discussion on the new-entrant salary scale and unified negotiating structures.
