In 2001, the Labour Court said it could see no basis to recommend the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim that new salary scales be used to calculate redundancy and early-retirement packages at Unilever Bestfoods. The recommendation was dated 5 September 2001. The union argued that the new scales would improve package and pension entitlements for staff leaving during a restructuring. Unilever Bestfoods said the scales were for employees staying in the company and taking on extra work. The Court recommended that the company put its existing package to the affected employees again on a voluntary basis.
