In 2001, the Labour Court recommended that Poplar Linens increase its redundancy payment to £16,000 for a worker with 27 years’ service. Its recommendation, dated 5 September 2001, followed a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for enhanced terms for three workers made redundant after part of the company closed. The Court recommended that the two workers with four years’ service accept the company’s existing offers of £2,500 each. It said the payments should include statutory redundancy entitlements and settle all claims against the company. The union had sought 3.5 weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements; the company had offered 2.5 weeks’ pay per year, inclusive of those entitlements.
