The Labour Court recommended changes to James Connolly Memorial Hospital’s arrangements for radiographers providing emergency on-call cover, in a recommendation dated 27 August 2001. It proposed one day off and half the standby allowance offered for a radiographer carrying a bleep while on standby.
The dispute concerned cover for theatre and cat-scanning services. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought four additional radiographers and two days off each week for staff carrying bleeps. The hospital offered standby payments and two additional posts, arguing that these would provide adequate cover for time off.
The Court recommended accepting the hospital’s conciliation offer with modifications. It called for a third additional radiography post and for the existing temporary post to be incorporated into the hospital establishment. The parties were to review the arrangements after publication of the Expert Group report on Radiography Grades.
