Labour Court recommends renewed talks on Limerick caretakers’ summer course payment claim

In 2001, the Labour Court recommended that Limerick Institute Of Technology and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union reactivate discussions over caretakers’ claim for payment for involvement with summer apprenticeship courses. The recommendation was dated 27 July 2001. The union said the courses brought extra security, supervisory, delivery and other duties. The Institute said the national agreement did not provide lump-sum payments for caretakers and that conceding the claim could have wider cost effects. The Court said the summer 2001 claim had been known to the employer in good time and appeared to have some merit. If the parties could not agree, the Court said it would issue a definitive recommendation on request.
