In 2001, the Labour Court recommended that Tytex Ireland Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree compensation for Alan Dickinson, whose appointment differed from the other temporary contracts in a dispute involving 18 general operatives. The union sought compensation after a 1999 lay-off, saying some workers believed they had permanent jobs. The company said the workers had written contracts specifying temporary employment. The Court did not find for the union on the general claim, but said Dickinson's appointment raised a case for the company to answer. Its recommendation, signed on 25 May 2001, left the parties to agree a figure or ask the Court for a definitive recommendation.
