In 2001, the Labour Court recommended that Lowe Alpine International improve its redundancy offer for 39 workers at its Tullamore plant, due to close on 31 March 2001. The recommendation was signed on 16 March 2001. The recommended package included statutory payments, four weeks’ pay per year of service as an ex-gratia payment, and £75 per year of service. It was to settle outstanding closure claims, including the claim to include a 2% increase due on 1 April 2001. The Non-Union Group had sought six weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlement; the company had offered two and a half weeks plus statutory entitlement, citing its poor financial position.
