The Labour Court recommended staged pay increases and changes to VHI and Christmas benefits for workers at Tyco Mallinckrodt’s Athlone plant, in a recommendation dated 13 February 2001. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said members’ pay had fallen behind and objected to partial VHI payments. The company cited production costs and recruitment conditions, and said it remained willing to accept the conciliation proposal. The Court recommended pay increases of 5%, 2% and 1%, with payment dates set out in the conciliation proposal. It also recommended accepting the VHI proposal and introducing new service-based Christmas vouchers. Existing service awards and dinner dance arrangements would continue, while the old Christmas vouchers would be dropped.
