The Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann, the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the National Bus and Rail Union continue under the existing arrangements for DART drivers unless they negotiate a new agreement. The recommendation was signed on 17 August 2000. The dispute concerned Iarnrod Eireann’s proposed 48-hour, five-over-seven-day working week and changes to pay and conditions. The unions sought compensation and extra annual leave for the change, along with other pay and working arrangements. The Court said significant changes to the proposals were not justified and could destabilise existing agreements. It also found that implementing the proposals was not crucial to maintaining an adequate service.
