In 2000, the Labour Court recommended improved redundancy terms for workers at Henniges Elastomers, where proposals included reducing staffing by 28 at its Ballina plant. The recommendation, signed on 8 May 2000, set terms of three weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements, with service rounded up to the nearest six months and selection by last in, first out. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought voluntary redundancies and five weeks’ pay per year of service, among other terms. The company cited continuing losses, falling prices and lost sales in support of its proposals. The Court also recommended phasing out an additional bonus over six months and setting the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness implementation date at 1 November 2000. It did not recommend gainsharing at that time, but said the company should share profits with the workforce if it returned to profit.
