The Labour Court recommended that Impact Industries recognise the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and negotiate with it on industrial relations matters affecting its members. The recommendation was dated 17 November 1999. The union sought negotiation rights for eight of the company’s nine operatives, who had joined the union since August 1999. Impact Industries said employees could join a union but preferred to negotiate with staff individually.
