In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that Cork Corporation concede a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for paid uncertified sick leave for operational staff in the Cork City Fire Brigade. The claim covered about 130 firefighters seeking six uncertified sick days a year. The Court said the claim had a reasonable basis because similar categories of staff in Dublin and Limerick had uncertified sick leave. It recommended the claim be conceded in national negotiations on fire brigade pay and conditions, with resolution expected before the national agreement expired. The recommendation was signed on 1 November 1999.
