The Labour Court recommended that Golden Vale PLC (Butter Milk Powder Division) accept its restructuring proposals with changes to sick pay, and pay £20 a week to each employee covered by the agreement. The recommendation was dated 26 November 1999. The dispute concerned the reorganisation of the division in Charleville, Co Cork. Golden Vale said the changes were needed to improve competitiveness and ensure the division’s viability. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a guaranteed income level and improved pension and sick pay terms, arguing that restructuring and curtailed operations would add to workers’ insecurity. The Court also recommended immediate discussions on a lead-in payment in full and final settlement of the claim.
