The Labour Court recommended immediate pay alignment for catering staff at the Institute of Technology, Sligo, with corresponding staff at Dundalk Institute of Technology. The recommendation, dated 12 October 1999, followed a dispute between Ballinode Catering Services and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The union had sought an increase in the workers’ hourly rate from £4.40 to £5.50, citing productivity and pay comparisons with cleaning staff. The Court also recommended talks on further productivity-based pay increases, to be completed within six months of acceptance, and further exploration of profit sharing.
