Labour Court recommends grievance process for St. James's Hospital nursing assistant

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The Labour Court recommended that St. James's Hospital begin an internal process to address nursing assistant Rose Mc Loughlin's grievances when she was medically fit to return to work. The recommendation was dated 30 September 1999.

Mc Loughlin had complained of bullying and harassment by supervisory staff. Hospital management rejected the claim and said she should first use its internal grievance procedures; it declined to attend the Labour Court hearing. The Court said the incidents did not objectively amount to bullying or harassment, but that Mc Loughlin perceived them that way. It considered the hospital's proposed internal process a fair and constructive way to address her grievances, and recommended that it begin when she was medically fit to return. The Court said management should be sensitive to her perception of events and support her through the process.
