In 1999, the Labour Court recommended £1,000 compensation for a worker who had lived for 27 years in a nurses’ residence at St Luke’s Hospital in Clonmel. The Court said the South Eastern Health Board handled her tenancy insensitively and should have given her more consideration when it decided to change the building’s use. The recommendation was signed on 17 September 1999.
The worker said she was told she would have to leave to allow refurbishment and that the building would no longer provide accommodation for nurses. She moved out on 3 August 1998. The Board said its Chief Nursing Officer had discussed the move with her in June and that she had time to find alternative accommodation.
She said her rent had been £70 a month at the residence and was £150 a month after leaving. The Court cited her 27-year tenure in recommending compensation.
