In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that Shinko Microelectronics Limited not concede the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for retrospective annual leave for workers on four-cycle shifts since 1996. The dispute concerned an extra day of leave introduced for those workers from the 1998 leave year. The union said the June shutdown had disadvantaged the shift workers and argued they should receive the extra leave retrospectively. Shinko said the additional leave formed part of a package introduced from 1998, with no retrospective application. The Court’s recommendation was signed on 9 July 1999.
