In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Glass Bottle not concede the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim to restore an on-site medical practitioner. The Court was not satisfied that the company had provided a general medical service. Its recommendation was signed on 5 July 1999. The union said the on-site service had been eroded without consultation and cited a staff handbook statement about free medical attention. The company said the doctors’ role was occupational health, rather than general medical care.
