In 1999, the Labour Court recommended an £8,000 ex-gratia lump sum for each DART driver serving on 3 August, settling disputes over direct recruitment and planned service extensions. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the National Bus and Rail Union brought the referral against Iarnrod Eireann. The recommendation was signed on 3 August 1999. The Court accepted that the parties had agreed to direct recruitment. It said the change in status of Bray and Fairview and the planned extensions would significantly affect staff, and that the impact had not been sufficiently acknowledged. The recommended payment was in full and final settlement of all issues in the referral.
