In 1999, the Labour Court recommended adjusting the accommodation allowance for station managers employed by Teagasc, following a claim by Manufacturing, Science, Finance. The recommendation was signed on 31 May 1999. The union sought to increase the annual allowance from £703 to £2,000, citing additional duties and the fact it had not increased since 1986. Teagasc said the allowance covered accommodation, unlike the separate payment for Heads of Department’s management responsibilities. The Court said the accommodation allowance had seriously lost value since its last adjustment in 1986. It recommended adjusting it by changes in the Building Index, using 1986 as the base year, with the change taking effect from the recommendation date.
