In 1999, the Labour Court recommended two redundancy options for eight technical operatives at the Irish Horse Racing Authority after finding that retaining them and seconding them to AutoTote was not viable. Its recommendation was signed on 11 May. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought to keep the workers employed by the authority and second them to the new contractor. The authority said AutoTote had filled its labour requirements and cited redundancy and alternative work options. The Court recommended full voluntary redundancy terms with either as much casual work selling Tote products at race tracks as the workers wanted until normal retirement age, or guaranteed work servicing 210 race meetings a year with an annual salary of £17,000.
