In 1999, the Labour Court recommended phasing out paid smoking breaks at Arthur Dagg & Co after a dispute with Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation kept three breaks until the end of March, two until the end of June and one until the end of July 1999, with smoking restricted to the smoking room at official break times. It recommended a total smoking ban from January 2000. The Court said the established practice required consultation and that a workforce ballot had not resolved the dispute. The recommendation was dated 22 March 1999.
