In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Kilkenny Textile Mills pay a lump sum equal to one week's pay to maintenance staff affected by temporary lay-offs, and that employees agree procedures for future lay-offs. The recommendation was dated 3 December. The dispute followed the company's decision to include maintenance staff in a temporary lay-off in April. The Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union said a 1992 agreement guaranteed craftworkers at least three weeks of maintenance work during lay-offs. The company said the 1992 letter applied only to the circumstances at that time. The Court said circumstances and the company's requirements had changed since 1992.
