In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that workers at Steel Company Of Ireland accept the company’s offer in a dispute over shift work and reorganisation. The package included a 20% shift premium, annualised hours arrangements and a once-off £150 payment per employee. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought a 25% premium and £1,500 compensation per worker, citing effects on family and social life, overtime earnings, transport and safety. The company said shift work was needed to maintain its viability and support future investment. The Court accepted that the company’s continued viability was at risk and recommended a review of shift operations after 12 months. It signed its recommendation on 26 November 1998.
