The Labour Court recommended that Kraft Jacobs Suchard urgently review pay ranges for its sales representatives and discuss them with the Marine, Port And General Workers' Union. It did not recommend restoring the former incremental salary scale. The union sought the return of the scale, arguing it had been part of the 1985 agreement and that only seven of 26 representatives had reached the £22,840 midpoint. The company said its merit-based system had been accepted and rewarded performance. The Court found no documentary support for the claimed regular reviews after 1988. It said the company's top point was below comparable industry scales, but actual pay compared well when merit increases were included. The recommendation was dated 27 October 1998.
