In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that temporary staff at Galway-Mayo Institute Of Technology who remained employed and had been on an open-competition panel be absorbed into permanent posts. It did not recommend the union's wider claim for confined competitions for current and future vacancies. The Irish Municipal, Public And Civil Trade Union argued that long-serving temporary staff's experience should count in recruitment. The Institute said recruitment rules required open competition and could not be changed without Departmental agreement. The recommendation was dated 6 October 1998.
