The Labour Court recommended that Irish Sugar apply the new grading structure to the claimants from August 1996. On a separate £1,000 lump-sum issue, it accepted the company’s method of application but recommended that firefighting and first-aid additives not be deducted. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said earlier recommendations had disturbed pay relativities between craft workers and general operatives and that the company had incorrectly offset arrears against the lump sum. Irish Sugar said it had implemented the earlier recommendations and opposed further payments. The recommendation was dated 8 October 1998.
