The Labour Court recommended that James McMahon Limited and the Building And Allied Trades' Union agree that wood machining is craft work. Any new role assisting wood machinists should be in a non-craft category, with its pay negotiated between the company and union. The dispute followed the introduction of non-time-served workers on computer-controlled timber machines. The union said the new role could undermine craft jobs; the company sought a new machine-operator grade. The Court signed its recommendation on 29 June 1998.
