The Labour Court recommended on 24 June 1998 that Professional Contract Services Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union reopen negotiations on an appropriate plus-rate for 30 contract cleaners at the Guinness site. The union sought higher pay, arguing the cleaners performed work beyond contract cleaning. The company said the workers did general cleaning and that its fixed-price contract left it unable to absorb extra costs. The Court said the workers were outside the contract-cleaning Employment Regulation Order and considered its rate inappropriate for their work. It said the parties could refer the matter back if they failed to reach agreement by 31 August 1998.
