In 1998, the Labour Court recommended a 40-week pro-rata arrangement for part-time technical assistants at the National College Of Art And Design, following a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The union sought 52 weeks' pay and further increments; the College said it could not justify full-year work and estimated the proposal would add £24,000 or £35,000 in annual costs. The Court considered a 40-week year reasonable given the College's work requirements. It recommended eligibility for employees working at least eight hours a week with qualifying service, set 1 January 1993 as the effective date, capped increments at four and specified when they would accrue. The recommendation was signed on 30 January 1998.
