In 1998, the Labour Court found that Sovereign Printers Limited unfairly dismissed a worker and recommended £200 compensation and a reference. The recommendation was signed on 20 January 1998. The worker, a printers’ assistant, said she was let go after an accident and had asked whether she could return after recovering. Sovereign Printers said business had deteriorated and that she had effected her own dismissal by requesting a P45. The Court found the employer had failed to put satisfactory procedures in place to explain employment terms and how employment could end. It concluded that the dismissal fell short of the standards expected of a reasonable employer.
