In 1998, the Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for a shift premium for security staff at De Beers Industrial Diamond Division (Ireland). The recommendation was dated 8 January 1998. The union sought the premium for 12 officers who worked continuous shifts, including weekends and public holidays, while other shift workers received premiums. The company said the officers’ salaries already included a shift disturbance allowance and cited an earlier Labour Court recommendation on the same claim.
