The Labour Court recommended against Pandoro conceding the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim to include shift pay in pension calculations. In its recommendation dated 31 October 1997, it proposed that the parties meet to explore workers using part of a national wage increase to fund changes to pension arrangements, with Pandoro also contributing. The union argued shift pay was regular for the workers involved and should count as pensionable pay, as it did for some other employees. Pandoro said the claim would cost £6,768 a year and that it could not afford the backfunding sought.
