In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Dubarry Shoes provide death-in-service insurance cover to age 65 for a worker whose long-term illness threatened their employment. The worker would remain on compassionate leave until then. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued the company should support a long-serving worker facing job loss through illness. Dubarry Shoes said it could not afford severance payments and cited its pension scheme and social welfare support. The recommendation was signed on 6 October 1997. The Court also recommended discussing future cases of employment ending because of long-term illness individually.
