In 1997, the Labour Court recommended changes to Aer Rianta’s snow and ice call-out arrangements and a further £400 in the lump-sum payment for affected workers. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union represented 28 Technical Operatives who were affected by proposed changes including telephone call-outs, use of their own transport and larger crews. The union sought a higher call-out payment, telephone rental, two additional increments and protection or reimbursement for workers using their own cars. Aer Rianta cited cost and precedent concerns, but was prepared to increase the £500 allowance to £750 to cover own transport. After considering both sides’ submissions, the Court recommended implementing the company proposals and increasing the £500 lump sum by a further £400. The recommendation was signed on 25 September 1997.
