In 1997, the Labour Court did not recommend that Iarnrod Eireann reverse a locomotive driver's original choice of lump-sum compensation for the elimination of mileage payments in favour of a fixed weekly allowance. The recommendation was signed on 16 September 1997. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the worker chose the lump sum after receiving incorrect information about whether the weekly allowance continued during illness. The Court concluded that the agreement between the union and Iarnrod Eireann was clear.
