In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Kerry Fashions (Textiles) Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union meet before 28 February 1998 to discuss implementing their 1994 agreement without causing terminal damage to the company. The recommendation was signed on 18 August 1997. The union sought phased pay increases, implementation of the 39-hour week and discussions on sick pay and a pension scheme. It said the company should honour the agreement and that trading had improved. The company said it remained unprofitable and that the requested increases risked its viability. The Court did not recommend implementing the agreement at that time, citing the company’s financial position and the effects of the agreement reached during 1994 High Court proceedings.
