In 1997, the Labour Court recommended against the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union claim for de-manning allowances for five Smurfit Web Press employees. The recommendation was signed on 6 August 1997. The union said the employees qualified under a 1981/82 agreement. The company argued the agreement covered only employees in the department at the time of the reorganisation and excluded later arrivals. The Court said the agreement was unclear on some points but did not recommend conceding the claim.
