On 7 July 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Atlantic Mills (Tullamore) increase its redundancy offer to four weeks' pay per year of service, plus statutory entitlements, for the 84 employees covered by the claim. The recommendation followed the planned closure of the Tullamore spinning facility, affecting 100 jobs. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought six weeks' pay per year of service, while the company offered three weeks for the first ten years and two weeks for each remaining year. The company cited losses and said the union's claim could put 300 jobs at its Longford plant at risk.
