In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Galtee Foods and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union seek efficiency improvements and agree how to share any savings to address pay differences between workers hired before and after 1992. The union sought a revised pay scale for workers recruited after 1992. Galtee Foods argued that the 1992 agreement should be honoured and higher pay costs would harm its competitiveness. The Court said the company’s position had not improved enough to roll back the arrangements, while recognising that the large differences for workers doing similar duties could cause discontent. The recommendation was dated 30 April 1997.
