In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that workers affected by the closure of Farah Limited's Galway factory receive 3½ weeks' pay per year of service, inclusive of statutory entitlement, in full settlement of claims. The factory closure followed a fire and put 70 jobs at risk. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a package reflecting workers' service, while the company cited financial difficulties and said the fire led it to review its operations and move to Kiltimagh. The Court noted that transfer to Kiltimagh was not generally available and recommended that pay be calculated at current rates. It signed the recommendation on 13 March 1997.
