In 1997, the Labour Court recommended a 1% increase on account for Peerless Rug Europe Limited employees from 1 March, with the outstanding balance of phase three of the Programme for Competitiveness and Work to be paid when the company’s financial position allowed. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the company had committed to paying all phases. Peerless cited trading difficulties and the risk that further labour costs would threaten jobs and the plant’s viability. The Court recommended the parties review whether further payments could be made in January. It signed the recommendation on 19 March 1997.
