In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnród Éireann arrange for a worker to transfer to its Motive Power Department as soon as possible and within six months, offering available permanent or temporary work. The recommendation was signed on 11 March 1997 after a dispute with the Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union. The union sought the worker’s return after his transfer to the Lifting Shop in 1993, arguing that junior workers remained in the department. The company said there was no vacancy and work levels had led to staff reductions. The Court found an unacceptable delay in dealing with the transfer request.
