In 1997, the Labour Court recommended a £1.15-an-hour increase in merit pay for workers at CBR Services Limited, following a union claim for a pay rise for nine local workers removing asbestos at the Portarlington power station. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought an increase of £2.60 an hour, arguing the work in pressurised suits was onerous. CBR Services said its effective rates were £6.02 and £6.20 after 31 December 1996 and had offered an increase of 80p an hour. The Court recommended the £1.15 increase under conditions agreed by the parties. The recommendation was dated 18 February 1997.
