In 1997, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann retain eight drivers at its Waterford depot after a dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union over a 1991 agreement. The union argued that the agreement required local discussions before the driver complement changed and that no agreement had been reached. Iarnrod Eireann said the union accepted a reduction to eight at a national meeting in December 1995. The Court found the balance of evidence supported the company’s position, as Waterford depot representatives attended that meeting.
